BREAKING: Police confirm discovery of body found close to Lanarkshire housing estate

Police swooped on a Blantyre housing estate tonight following the discovery of a body.

We told earlier how homeowners in the Westcraigs area of the town reported a heavy police presence on Westerpark Avenue, close to Dornoch and Halkirk Gate.

Officers worked quickly this evening to tape off an area of parkland, popular with dog walkers and families in the estate.

Residents also reported a police helicopter had been hovering above shortly before officers swooped on the area just after 5pm this evening.

A Police Scotland spokeswoman told Lanarkshire Live: "Around 5.25pm on Monday, 28 February, officers discovered a body in the water at Westerpark Avenue, Blantyre.

"Enquiries are ongoing."

On Tuesday morning officers confirmed that the 'sudden death' is 'not believed to be suspicious'.

Enquiries are ongoing to establish the full circumstances.

A report will be sent to the Procurator Fiscal.
