Darts commentator Nigel Pearson dies aged 52 as Phil Taylor and Gerwyn Price pay tributes

Darts legends have paid tribute to "a great guy and commentator" after the death of presenter and journalist Nigel Pearson at the age of 52.

Having spent more than a decade covering darts, Pearson was best known for his love of speedway. It was the sport's UK governing body which announced the news of his death with a statement on social media.

"It is with the deepest sadness and regret that we announce the passing of much loved sport commentator, presenter and journalist, Nigel Pearson, aged 52, earlier today," Official British Speedway wrote. "We ask everyone to fully respect Nigel’s family’s privacy at this time.

"All of our thoughts and love go to his wife Kerrie, daughter Sarah and sons Liam and Jake. A full tribute to Nigel will follow."

World number one darts player Gerwyn Price was one of those who paid tribute to Pearson after hearing the news of his passing. "Shocked and saddened of the passing of Nigel Pearson great guy great commentator will be deeply missed my thoughts are with all his family and friends," the Welshman wrote on Twitter.

Phil Taylor was another who paid his respects to Pearson. The retired 16-time world champion wrote: "Sad, sad news about Nigel Pearson passing away. Always polite and a good guy. RIP."

A statement from the PDC said: "All at the PDC are deeply saddened to learn that iconic commentator Nigel Pearson passed away earlier on Friday. Nigel will be sorely missed by all at the PDC and we send our condolences to his family at this time."

Pearson's voice will have been heard by listeners and viewers of most of Britain's major broadcasting networks. Over the years, he worked for Sky Sports, BT Sport, TalkSPORT and Eurosport, among others, covering a wide range of events but excelling in his darts and speedway coverage.

He was also a football fan and keen supporter of West Bromwich Albion. The Championship club also paid tribute, writing: "We are heartbroken to learn of the passing of Nigel Pearson. An inspirational broadcaster. A huge Albion fan. A true friend. Our thoughts are with Nigel's family at this desperately sad time. We'll miss you so, so much Nige."
