Breaking: Notts County confirm head coach appointment

Notts County have confirmed that Luke Williams has been appointed as new head coach ahead of the 2022/23 season.

The 41-year-old joins from Swansea City, where he was assistant head coach to manager Russell Martin. Williams has managed Brighton U21s, Bristol U23s and Swindon Town. He also worked with Martin at MK Dons before the duo moved to south Wales.

Williams, who left Swansea in February for personal reasons, is joined at Meadow Lane by assistant Ryan Harley. The 37-year-old former midfielder coached alongside Williams at MK Dons and played under him at both Brighton and Swindon.

A statement from the club reads: “We’re delighted that Luke and Ryan have joined us as our new head coach and
assistant head coach.

“Between them they have the right management skills and experience of all EFL divisions, as well as the National League, which we believe will help us achieve our goal of promotion and getting back to where we feel we belong.

“Luke's values and playing principles are aligned with our own and we feel the continuity and consistency this brings will be a huge factor in ensuring a smooth transition to his leadership.

“We have been very impressed not only with Luke’s general character, but also his excitement about this opportunity and his fierce determination to succeed.

“He fully understands the pressure and expectation that comes with this role and we can see he’s ready to take on the challenge.

“Luke has already met with our recruitment team to discuss our current squad and ongoing transfer targets and we look forward to working closely with him to build a team which will give us the best possible chance of earning the promotion we all crave in 2022-23.”

The Magpies were left searching for a new boss following the exit of Ian Burchnall. The former manager left earlier this summer to take up the head coach role at League One side Forest Green Rovers.

Since then, owners Christoffer and Alexander Reedtz have been working to bring a new man to Notts as they look to lead the Magpies back to the Football League at the end of next season.

The new boss will officially be unveiled at 2pm UK time as he meets the media for the first time. He will be joined by the club's owners as they outline their plans for next season.
