Martin Odegaard named as Arsenal captain ahead of Emirates Cup clash with Sevilla

Martin Odegaard has been named Arsenal's new men's first-team captain ahead of their clash with Sevilla in the Emirates Cup this afternoon.

A statement on the club's website read: "We are delighted to announce that Martin Odegaard has been named our new men’s first-team captain.

"The 23-year-old has made a huge impact since arriving at Emirates Stadium from Real Madrid in January 2021, initially on loan, and has gone on to play 60 times and scoring nine goals.

"Odegaard has experience of wearing the armband, having been Norway captain since March 2021, whom he has won 43 caps for.

"We wish Martin every success as our captain. We will have more on the appointment here after today's match."

Although Alexandre Lacazette assumed the role as Arsenal's foremost leader, the Gunners didn't officially name a new club captain after Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang was stripped from the role in December of last year. Now with Lacazette no longer at the club following his free transfer to Lyon, Odegaard - who has captained the side on several occasions - will take on duties on a full-time basis.

Kieran Tierney was thought to be the other top candidate, but his unfortunate injury record may have swayed Mikel Arteta's thinking.

Although only 23, Odegaard is already the captain of his country and the Norwegian will be looking to use that experience to help lead Arsenal to new heights.
