Police swarmed to Stockport on Tuesday evening (October 25) after huge crowds gathered for what is believed to be a 'car meet'. Drivers reported gridlocked traffic around Great Portwood Street which was closed, with congestion backed up to Portwood Roundabout.
Pictures showed high-end supercars driving to the meet up, with 'hundreds' reportedly gathering near Portwood Retail Park and the Peel Centre. Witnesses told the Manchester Evening News of the huge crowds, with one saying they 'thought there had been a big incident'.
Videos circulating on social media also showed people jumping on top of police vans as the huge crowds gathered. Youtuber 'DMO Deejay' shared clips to his Instagram story appearing to show the masses of people at the retail park.

There was much speculation about the significant police presence in the south Manchester suburb, with numerous posts on social media. Many referenced what is believed to be a 'car meet' was taking place. It is understood a police helicopter was also circling the area.
On Facebook, one person wrote: "Stockport is rammed with cars bikes and feds!" as another posted: "What’s going on in Stockport? Cars and bikes racing around, backfiring, the road that the Peel Centre is on shut by police."
Another person publicly shared: "Does anyone know what’s happened at the Peel Centre in Stockport? Loads of police and it’s all blocked off in all directions!!"
A witness told the MEN: "There were hundreds of people, if not more. Honestly when I first drove by I thought there’d been a big incident."
MancTraffic tweeted on Tuesday: "Severe congestion in Stockport Town Centre due to a Car Meet: *A560 Great Portwood St CLOSED *A6188 St Mary's Way n/b gridlocked onto Portwood Rbt *M60 ac/w j27 exit slow *Tesco car park off Tiviot Way stuffed. Police on scene."
Youtuber DMO Deejay had shared videos from the location publicly on his Instagram story, showing what appeared to be hundreds of people gathering. Hours before, he had shared another story which read "Have we driven three hours to a car meet? Yes."
Greater Manchester Police has been approached for more information on the incidents. The MEN has contacted DMO Deejay for a comment.
