Huge disruption on Lanarkshire railway lines set to affect rush hour commuters

Train commuters are being hit by major disruption on the railway lines this afternoon, affecting journeys across Lanarkshire.

Network Rail has reported a fibre cable failure which is affecting several routes including Balloch to Airdrie, Dalmuir to Larkhall, Milngavie to Motherwell, Milngavie to Edinburgh via Airdrie, Motherwell to Dalmuir, Dalmuir to Whifflet and Larkhall to Milngavie.

Replacement bus services have been in place throughout the day, although Scotrail are urging customers to make alternative arrangements if possible due to limited rail replacement transport.

It is understood that the McGill's bus service 212 between Caldercruix and Airdrie and Whitelaws service between Larkhall, Hamilton and Motherwell, is in place this afternoon.

Commuters who decide not to travel today are entitled to a full ticket refund.

A spokesperson for Network Rail said: "Engineers have found the source of the fault and are now working on a repair.

"We're unable to provide a timescale for the fibre optic cable repair at this time, but will keep you updated.

"We're sorry for the disruption this fault has caused passengers today."
