GMP issue statement after stranger tries to grab girl, 5, in park

Police have launched an investigation after a stranger tried to pick up a five-year-old girl in a park.

The shocking incident happened while the girl was playing at Nuttall Park in Ramsbottom, near Bury, at about 3pm on Sunday.

Detectives say an unknown man approached the girl before attemping to pick her up. After her parents intervened, the man ran off into a nearby area of woodland.

The child - a reception pupil at St Andrew's CE Primary School in Ramsbottom - was not harmed in the incident, according to Greater Manchester Police.

The force says it is investigating the 'suspicious circumstances' surrounding the incident. Detectives say they want to speak a man seen in the area, who is described as a tall, white male wearing black gloves, a red bobble hat, a black jacket and had a backpack on.

Chief Inspector Ian Partington of GMP’s Bury District, said: “We understand that this incident has caused some concern in the community.

“We thank the public for their patience and assistance so far, and ask that anyone with information should contact us first to aid our investigation. If you see the man described, call us on 101 quoting incident 1965 of the 12/2/2023.”
