Gang on motorbikes fire at man as police called to reports of shooting

A police cordon remains in place today after a man was fired upon by a gang on motorbikes in Newton Heath.

Police were called to a report of a shooting on Briscoe Lane North at around 7.50pm last night (Thursday). Officers said they believe four unknown offenders on two motorbikes were involved.

The gang approached the victim and shot him with what police believed to have been a BB gun or a similar weapon. He was left with an injury on his finger.

This morning, a police scene remains in place on nearby Millwright Street following the incident. A section of the road has been taped off and at least police car is stationed at the scene.

Forensic officers were pictured carrying out investigations at the scene last night. Anyone with information is being urged to come forward.

In a statement, a GMP spokesperson said: "At around 7.50pm last night (19 May), police were called to a report of a firearm discharge on Briscoe Lane North. Initial enquiries suggest that four unknown offenders on two motorbikes approached the male victim before shooting what is at this time believed to have been a bb gun or a similar weapon.

"The victim was left with an injury to his finger. Enquiries are ongoing and anyone with information is asked to contact police on 101 quoting log number 2900 of the 19th May 2022. Alternatively, contact Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111."
