England confirm OneLove armband U-turn after FIFA confirm Harry Kane yellow card threat

The FA have announced that England, along with six other European nations due to wear the OneLove armband at the 2022 Qatar World Cup, will not now do so.

The decision comes after the threat of captains receiving a yellow card for wearing the armband was upheld by FIFA, despite initial belief that it would just result in a fine.

England kick off their tournament against Iran later today and the news of the discussions between the FA and FIFA have now dominated the build-up after Harry Kane confirmed the desire to wear the armband on Sunday.

In a statement from the joint football associations, it was confirmed: "Fifa has been very clear that it will impose sporting sanctions if our captains wear the armbands on the field of play. As national federations, we can’t put our players in a position where they could face sporting sanctions including bookings, so we have asked the captains not to attempt to wear the armbands in Fifa World Cup games.

"We were prepared to pay fines that would normally apply to breaches of kit regulations and had a strong commitment to wearing the armband. However, we cannot put our players in the situation where they might be booked or even forced to leave the field of play.

"We are very frustrated by the Fifa decision which we believe is unprecedented – we wrote to Fifa in September informing them of our wish to wear the One Love armband to actively support inclusion in football, and had no response. Our players and coaches are disappointed – they are strong supporters of inclusion and will show support in other ways."

Netherlands, Germany, Denmark, Switzerland and Wales have all agreed to do the same. It follows Harry Kane saying, "We've made it clear as a team and staff that we want to wear the armband."

Earlier this week FA CEO Mark Bullingham said: "We are prepared to take a fine if necessary. We've been very clear that all England teams will be wearing that for this season. It's a really positive message for inclusivity and we think it's important to do that."

England kick off against Iran at 1pm, where the players will take the knee in support of the ongoing fight against racial discrimination.
