Video from the scene showed a boat being lowered into the water. The emergency services' response was not affecting traffic in the area.

A spokesperson for Greater Manchester Fire and Rescue Service (GMFRS) said: "At around 1.55pm on Monday 26 June, fire crews were called to support Greater Manchester Police (GMP) with a water rescue incident on the Manchester Ship Canal near the Centenary Bridge.

"Fire engines from Agecroft, Moss Side and Eccles stations, as well as the technical rescue unit from Ashton and the water incident unit from Eccles, quickly attended the scene.

"Firefighters from the water incident unit used two rescue sleds to assist with the search of the canal and neighbouring banks. The incident has now been handed over to the police underwater search unit.”

The M.E.N. has asked GMP for a comment.
