Breaking down Chiefs’ pick in Draft Wire’s way-too-early 2024 mock draft

It hasn’t even been a full 24 hours since the conclusion of the 2023 NFL draft and our friend Curt Popejoy over at Draft Wire already has turned the chapter to 2024.

In his way-too-early first-round 2024 mock draft, Popejoy sends the Chiefs Ohio State S Josh Proctor. He returned to Ohio State as a fifth-year senior in 2023 due to the NCAA’s COVID-eligibility rules. Listed at 6-foot-2 and 195 pounds, he has the ideal size to play the position in the NFL.

In 2022, he appeared in 11 games with the Buckeyes, recording 21 total tackles, 1.5 tackles for loss, a sack and two passes defended. He’ll have to take a big leap in his production in 2023 in order to be considered a first-round pick. He certainly has the measurables and he has some moments on tape like this:

I’d be surprised if the Chiefs ended up going with a safety in the first round in the 2024 NFL draft. It’d almost certainly mean that they opted to use the out year in Justin Reid’s three-year contract or that a player like Bryan Cook has failed to take a second-year leap. Mike Edwards is slated to be a free agent in 2024, but the Chiefs also traded up in Round 4 of the 2023 NFL draft to select a versatile DB in Chamarri Conner.
