Djed Spence has departed Tottenham Hotspur to join Rennes on loan for the remainder of the season. Only moving to Spurs from Middlesbrough back in July after excelling in his year on loan with Nottingham Forest, the Lilywhites had given the green light for the right wing-back to leave on a temporary basis before Tuesday evening's transfer deadline after a lack of playing time in N17.
Unable to move ahead of Emerson Royal and Matt Doherty in Antonio Conte's thinking, Spence has only featured in six games for Tottenham since his summer switch, totalling 41 minutes in the process. Given his need to be playing week in, week out if he is to become a success at Tottenham in years to come, the 22-year-old has linked up with French outfit Rennes for the rest of the campaign.
Spence will join fellow Tottenham teammate Joe Rodon at Roazhon Park after the centre-back made the move to the Ligue 1 side at the beginning of August. A number of clubs were interested in a deal for Spence ahead of the transfer deadline, including Atletico Madrid and Italian outfit Sassuolo, but the talented youngster opted for Rennes from a group of five clubs that submitted loan offers.

football.london understands that Spence's loan is a straight one without an option to buy as Spurs believe that he can still have a long-term future at the club. The player was not keen on leaving the club permanently either as he believes he can have a future in a Tottenham shirt.
Given his struggles to play regularly for Spurs this campaign, game time should come his way in France with injuries in Rennes' right-back area, including captain Hamari Traore who is set for a spell out. Spence's debut could come in the next few days as Rennes host Strasbourg on Wednesday evening, before Lille travel to Roazhon Park three days later.
