Digital Underground rap star Shock G found dead in hotel room at the age of 57

Rap star Shock G has passed away at the age of 57.

The musician's death follows the sad passing of fellow rap stars DMX and Black Rob earlier this month.

TMZ reports that Shock G was found dead in a hotel room in Tampa on Thursday.

The cause of death is currently unknown and the star's father says authorities will conduct an autopsy.

Shock G, real name Greg Jacobs, was best known for being lead singer of the pioneering hip hop group Digital Underground.

He also used the alter ego Humpty Hump, and was a rapper and keyboardist who was responsible for a number of influential tracks.

His tracks included Digital Underground’s Doowutchyalike and the group’s hit single The Humpty Dance, which he performed as his alter ego.

The Humpty Dance's catchy tune and the bass line from the song have been sampled by hundreds of artists since its release in 1990, including the likes of Will Smith, LL Cool J, Public Enemy and R&B group TLC.

The rapper was also known for working with Tupac and featured on the 1993 song I Get Around.

In 1995, Tupac described his times with Shock G as "some of the best times of my life..."

Shock G also produced songs for the likes of Dr Dre, Prince and KRS-One.

Digital Underground's co-founder Chopmaster J was among those to pay tribute to the star following the sad news.

He wrote on social media: "34 years ago almost to the day we had a wild idea we can be a hip hop band and take on the world through it all the dream became a reality and the reality became a nightmare for some.

"And now he’s awaken from the fame long live shock G Aka Humpty Hump and Rest In Peace my Brotha Greg Jacobs!!!”

Shock G was born and raised on the East Coast of America before settling in Oakland.

He helped to form Digital Underground in the late 1980s with Chopmaster J and Kenneth Water.
