Cody Gakpo and Liverpool reach £45m transfer agreement as PSV confirm deal

Liverpool have reached an agreement with PSV Eindhoven to sign Cody Gakpo this January window, with the Dutch striker set to join the Reds in a £45million move.

PSV general manager Marcel Brands confirmed the news on the club's official website, with the Reds expected to part company with an initial £37m for the Netherlands international, and the Eredivisie side eventually receiving a record fee for a player.

Gakpo impressed for his nation during the 2022 World Cup in Qatar, where he was on target three times before the Netherlands were knocked out in the quarter-finals by eventual winners Argentina.

The 23-year-old attracted serious attention from Erik ten Hag and Manchester United, but Mirror Sport understands the Red Devils dawdled while making an offer for the striker and wanted to pay more of the fee in add-ons.

Liverpool, meanwhile, were happy to pay a bigger fee up front, which has resulted in them hijacking United's transfer, with PSV accepting their bid.

Liverpool have been without the injured Diogo Jota, Luis Diaz and Roberto Firmino this season, and Gakpo will provide Darwin Nunez with competition for a place in the starting XI.

The striker was given permission to fly to the UK this Boxing Day to complete his transfer to Liverpool, which is set to be officially announced as soon as the January transfer window opens.

A PSV spokesperson wrote on the club's official website: "PSV and Liverpool FC have reached an agreement on the upcoming transfer of Cody Gakpo.

"The 23-year-old attacker will immediately leave for England where he will undergo the necessary formalities to complete the transfer. Both clubs are not making any announcements about the transfer fee."

PSV general manager Brands added: "But this is a record transfer for PSV."

The original statement concluded: "The PSV management completed the transfer on Boxing Day and gave Gakpo permission to travel to England."

Gakpo's international teammate Virgil van Dijk hinted Liverpool could dip into the transfer market this January ahead of his side's win over Aston Villa on Boxing Day.

"Hopefully the injured players can come back soon," said Van Dijk. "And hopefully we can welcome some new players at our football club. We will see. I think that quality is always welcome at Liverpool."
