Chelsea confirm fifth summer signing as Mauricio Pochettino rebuild continues

Chelsea have confirmed their fifth signing of the summer transfer with the addition of youngster Alex Matos from Norwich. The Blues have officially announced the addition of the 18-year-old following the expiry of his contract with the Canaries.

The winger made 13 appearances in Premier League 2 last term and provided two assists, and will look to enhance the talent in Chelsea's development squad and academy next term. Matos joined Norwich from Luton Town in 2016 before earning his debut for the under-21 side last term. He went on to sign his first professional contract with the East Anglian side having started his two-year scholarship with the club in July 2021.

"I'm a forward who can play anywhere in the front line," Matos said after signing his pro-deal. "My pace is probably my best attribute, getting into the box and creating chances, it’s a big part of my game."

However, the new addition has also featured in the centre of midfield more recently.

The Blues have already added Christopher Nkunku and Nicolas Jackson to their first team ranks and are expected to make additions to their development squad much like last season where they signed the likes of Omari Hutchinson, Zak Sturge and Cesare Casadei.

Chelsea have also announced the signings of 16-year-old Kendry Paez this summer, though he cannot join the club until he is 18, and Dujuan Richards, who will join the club when he turns 18 later this year form Phoenix academy.

Matos is believed to have joined on a free transfer following the end of his Norwich contract but some add-ons may still be payable to the Championship club.

The announcement follows the news that midfielder Charlie Webster has joined Heerenveen on a season-long loan in his first move away from Chelsea. The 19-year-old will take part in his first training session with the Dutch side on Saturday, after being a crucial member of the development squad over the last two season.
