Chelsea and Manchester United reach £60m transfer agreement for Mason Mount

Chelsea and Manchester United have reached an agreement worth around £60 million for Mason Mount, football.london understands.

After weeks of negotiations over the England international, who has 12 months remaining on his contract at Stamford Bridge, United have finally broken through. The Red Devils will pay Chelsea £55m plus a further £5m in add-ons for Mount, who has already agreed personal terms ahead of a move to Old Trafford.

Today marked the start of what was described to football.london as 'definitive talks' between Chelsea and United for Mount's signature after three offers from the Manchester-based club had already been turned down by the Blues. The two clubs, though, have found a solution fast in these decisive talks and now Mount will undergo the formalities of completing a move to Old Trafford in the coming days.

Chelsea and Mount had been in dialogue over signing a new contract for the past 12 months. There was confidence before last year's World Cup that a deal could be struck but things changed once he returned home from the international tournament.

Mount and his entourage thought they had verbally agreed terms of a new contract with Chelsea but the club took it off the table once he returned back to Cobham. The Blues then offered the 24-year-old midfielder a one-year extension on his deal in February, which would have seen his salary increase but the suggestion was swiftly turned down, football.london understands.

Talks have continued over the past few months. However, the likes of Man United, Liverpool and Arsenal had all been put on alert due to the situation, with all three Premier League clubs registering an interest in Mount.

At one point, Liverpool were front-runners but when United came calling, Mount's preferred destination was Old Trafford. Now, Chelsea and United have reached an agreement for Mount, who is set to end his 18-year association with the west London club.
