Brazilian Supreme Court Orders Suspension Of Elon Musk's X Platform

U.S. Supreme Court building is seen in Washington

On Friday, a Supreme Court justice in Brazil ordered Elon Musk's social media platform X to suspend operations in the country until it complies with court orders and pays existing fines. The court gave the social media site 24 hours to name a new legal representative or face suspension. The deadline passed without action from Musk or company leadership, resulting in an order for the immediate and complete suspension of company activities in Brazil.

The court's actions stem from X's refusal to comply with orders to censor political opponents, including a senator and a 16-year-old girl. The company's statement argued that the orders violated Brazil's free speech laws. However, the justice, Alexandre de Moraes, has been granted powers to combat digital threats to democracy following the 2022 election.

De Moraes has targeted content posted by online groups spreading misinformation about former President Jair Bolsonaro. Some groups suggested election interference and supported a coup attempt. The justice's actions have made him a hero among left-leaning Brazilians but a target of right-wing followers.

X's statement emphasized its commitment to protecting freedom of speech and refusal to comply with illegal orders in secret. The public feud between Musk and de Moraes escalated with Musk calling the justice an 'evil dictator cosplaying as a judge.'

The issue has raised concerns about international interference, with critics highlighting the danger of a foreign billionaire influencing national legislation. Despite the ongoing dispute, X continues to operate in Brazil.
