Brazilian President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva has been discharged from the hospital after undergoing surgery to address a brain bleed. The 79-year-old president, who appeared alongside his medical team in a press conference, expressed his gratitude for the successful procedure and reassured the public of his well-being.
Lula emphasized his determination to continue working for the country, stating that despite his age, he possesses the energy and enthusiasm necessary to lead Brazil forward. His doctors confirmed that the surgery was successful and that he is expected to recuperate at his home in Sao Paulo until Thursday, where he will be able to engage in limited activities such as walking and holding meetings.
While international travel remains off the table for the time being, Lula may be able to travel to Brasilia pending a positive medical evaluation. The president also addressed the recent arrest of Gen. Walter Braga Netto, a former member of President Jair Bolsonaro's government and his 2022 running mate, in connection with an alleged coup plot.
Lula condemned any actions that undermine democracy and the rule of law, expressing his concern over high-ranking military officials allegedly involved in plotting against the government. Braga Netto, along with Bolsonaro and others, was indicted on charges related to a coup plot to maintain Bolsonaro in power after the 2022 elections.
While formal charges have yet to be filed against Braga Netto, his recent arrest was linked to allegations of obstructing the collection of evidence. The situation continues to unfold as investigations into the alleged coup plot progress.
