Brazilian Dancer Ingrid Silva Empowers Diversity And Inclusivity In Ballet

Silva advocates for diversity and inclusivity in ballet.

Brazilian dancer Ingrid Silva is breaking barriers and inspiring change in the world of ballet. Silva, a member of the Dance Theater of Harlem, has been advocating for more diversity and inclusivity in the dance industry.

One of Silva's main challenges was finding pointe shoes that matched her skin tone. She had to color her shoes with makeup until 2019 when brands finally started offering more shades. Silva hopes to create her own line of pointe shoes, similar to Rihanna's Fenty makeup line, to cater to dancers of all skin tones.

Coming from Rio De Janeiro, Silva's journey to becoming a professional dancer was not without obstacles. Despite financial constraints, her mother encouraged her to pursue sports, leading her to discover ballet at the age of 8. Silva's dedication and passion for ballet propelled her to join the Dance Theater of Harlem in New York.

As a Black dancer, Silva recognizes the importance of representation and being a role model for young girls, especially those who may not see themselves reflected in the dance world. She embraces her role as an inspiration and enjoys connecting with fans, particularly young Black girls who are inspired by her performances.

Even after becoming a mother in 2021, Silva continued to dance and found empowerment in her postpartum journey. She views her body as a symbol of strength and motherhood, enhancing her artistry on stage. Through her EmpowerHerNY initiative, Silva supports women's empowerment and mental health, providing resources and opportunities for women worldwide.

Silva's impact extends beyond the dance world, as she has garnered attention from famous figures like Alicia Keys and Jennifer Garner. Collaborating with brands like Nike and Cadillac, Silva's story of resilience and success has reached new heights.

As she continues to inspire others and advocate for diversity in ballet, Silva remains grateful for the support and recognition she has received. Her journey serves as a testament to the power of perseverance and representation in the arts.
