Brazen crooks make off with 'six figure sum' in smash and grab at Lanarkshire ATM

Police in Motherwell are investigating a smash and grab theft at an ATM.

That’s after crooks damaged a machine outside a store on Carfin Road before making off with an undisclosed sum of money.

However, Lanarkshire Live understands the cash stolen is estimated to be “a six figure sum”.

The theft happened around around 11.30pm on Monday (January 31) and follows a failed heist at an ATM in Ayr the previous day.

It has not yet been established whether the two incidents are linked, but now detectives are appealing for help from the public in tracing those responsible.

Detective Inspector Laura Sands told us: “Our enquiries into the incident are ongoing and I would urge anyone who may have seen or heard any suspicious activity to get in touch.

“We would also be keen to speak to anyone who may have dashcam or private CCTV from the area around that time.”

The incident in Ayr saw brazen crooks try to rip the cash machine away from the Shell garage forecourt.

Sources told our sister site Ayrshire Live that the two suspects used a chain and dragged the ATM off its foundations, but left empty handed.

Anyone with any information in relation to the incident is asked to contact police on 101.

Information can be left anonymously via Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.
