Brawl involving 30 people and 'armed youths' part of violence plaguing Enfield, police say

A dispersal order is covering parts of Enfield after members of the public were assaulted and a mass fight broke out involving more than 30 people in a string of violence last Friday.

Officers were called to reports of “youths armed with weapons” in Enfield Town and an officer was also attacked while he dealt with a separate altercation, the area’s policing team have said.

In one case a woman was assaulted as she intervened when a large group tried to steal from a shop.

A dispersal order is in place covering Enfield Town centre and nearby streets including Cecil Road, Church Street and part of London Road on Tuesday to try and stop other incidents from happening in the area.

It comes after a 15-year-old boy was left fighting for his life after being stabbed in the chest nearby, close to the entrance of Bush Hill park in January.

A woman was also arrested on suspicion of murder after a 66-year-old man was found dead in a communal area of flats in Lockhart Road earlier this month.

Inspector James Wright, from the Edmonton neighbourhoods team, told the Standard: “Last Friday we saw a number of incidents in the Enfield town centre area which required significant police attendance.

“Behaviour of this kind is completely unacceptable and we know it causes significant concern for those who live and work in the area.

“As a result, we have put a section 35 order in place, which allows us to disperse any groups causing anti-social behaviour in the area, helping to prevent crime and the fear of crime.

“We will also have extra police patrols in the area at key times and have been speaking directly to local businesses to listen to their concerns and offer advice and support.”
