Braves Sign Merrifield To Replace Injured Albies At Second

CORRECTS TO NINTH INNING NOT EIGHTH INNING - Atlanta Braves second baseman Ozzie Albies holds his wrist after an injury in the ninth inning of a baseball game against the St. Louis Cardinals, Sunday,

The Atlanta Braves have taken swift action to address the injury to second baseman Ozzie Albies, who is expected to miss approximately eight weeks with a fractured left wrist. In response to Albies' placement on the 10-day injured list, the Braves have recalled infielder Nacho Alvarez Jr. from Triple-A Gwinnett and signed veteran Whit Merrifield.

Following Sunday's 6-2 loss to the St. Louis Cardinals, outfielder Eli White was optioned to Triple-A Gwinnett. To make room for Merrifield on the 40-man roster, outfielder Forrest Wall was designated for assignment.

Merrifield, who was released by Philadelphia on July 12, brings valuable experience to the Braves, having served as a utility player with the Phillies. His versatility, particularly at second base, will be crucial as the Braves navigate Albies' absence for a significant portion of the regular season.

With Albies sidelined, the Braves may look to infielder Orlando Arcia, who made 43 starts at second base in 2021, to fill the void. Alvarez, primarily a shortstop in the minors, could transition to second base, with Merrifield providing depth and support if needed.

Albies sustained his injury while attempting to catch a throw during Sunday's game against the Cardinals. The loss of Albies adds to the Braves' injury woes, with key players like Ronald Acuña Jr. and Michael Harris II already sidelined with significant injuries earlier in the season.

In addition to Albies' injury, the Braves recently placed All-Star left-hander Max Fried on the 15-day injured list due to forearm neuritis. The team has also been without ace right-hander Spencer Strider, who underwent season-ending Tommy John surgery in April.

As the Braves adjust their lineup to compensate for Albies' absence, the signing of Merrifield and the promotion of Alvarez reflect the team's proactive approach to overcoming challenges and maintaining competitiveness in the National League.
