'Braverman Centre for Cruelty': Refugee centre 'renamed' in protest against Home Office

ASYLUM rights campaigners have taken a swipe at the “cruelty” of the UK Government towards migrants with a creative protest at an immigration centre in England.

Freedom from Torture, a charity which supports people who have suffered from egregious human rights abuses, has erected a sign at the Manston immigration processing centre in Kent, which has been the centre of a row about the conditions of asylum seekers in recent weeks.

Taking a swipe at the Home Secretary, the sign reads: “Suella Braverman Centre for Cruelty to Refugees”.

The group shared an image of the protest on social media with the caption: “We rebranded the refugee ‘processing centre’ in Manston so everybody knows who's responsible for it.”

The Home Office is facing threats of legal action over the conditions at the centre, which has seen disease outbreaks. Migrant groups have also accused the government of failing to look after children held at the facility.

People held at the facility have been detained there for longer than is allowed in law and the centre has become overcrowded.

It has sparked a major row over the Government’s asylum policy, which the Conservatives have said is “broken”.

Braverman has been heavily criticised for using inflammatory language to describe the crisis, comparing the influx of asylum seekers to an “invasion”.

Freedom from Torture were previously involved in the successful effort to have the airline contracted by the Home Office to deport refugees to Rwanda pull out of the project.

They claimed victory after Mallorca-based Privilege Airlines last month said it would not work with the government.

The Observer reported on Sunday that the Home Office was desperately struggling to recruit workers to process asylum claims and staff with no experience in the field were working for the department without training in a bid to tackle a mounting backlog of claims.
