A quick-thinking police officer raced into action to save a woman hanging by her fingertips 30 feet above a railway line. The incident could have ended very differently were it not for the quick thinking of Sgt Steven Munday from Crewe.
The Cheshire officer was called out to reports of a woman who was on a pub roof but while he was there, getting ready to try to encourage her to come down, she slipped. The woman was left dangling precariously.
Sgt Munday took charge of the situation, working out the safest possible way to help her. He also had to factor in putting road closures in place and requesting that power on the railway line be switched off and trains stopped reports CheshireLive.
He spotted a set of ladders in the beer garden of the building and was on his way to retrieve them when he was told the woman had slipped. Sgt Munday displayed "clear thinking under pressure", racing into the building down two sets of stairs to retrieve the ladder from the beer garden.

He used the ladders to get to the top of the wall, walking along a narrow ledge with a sheer drop before getting access to the flat roof. He then managed to grab hold of the now hysterical young woman by her upper arms, pulling her back from over the edge of the roof using his own strength and body weight.
The young woman resisted but he grappled with her and managed to bring her to her safety on the top of the narrow roof. He pulled her as far away from the edge and drop as possible.
Once she was safely detained, his colleagues and other emergency services assisted and brought her down. Sgt Munday has now been nominated for a National Police Bravery Awards for this incredible feat, which happened on January 28 2022.
Cheshire Police Federation praised him for saving the young woman's life through his "quick, courageous and decisive actions". Cheshire Police Federation Chair Jamie Thompson said: “Sergeant Munday demonstrated the very best of policing and acted on instinct to save this young woman’s life.
"He is extremely humble about his actions that night, but we are incredibly proud of him and the way he put her safety ahead of his own. She is still alive today due to PS Munday’s quick, courageous, and decisive actions and is a worthy nominee for a bravery award.”
Chief Inspector Fez Khan also praised Sgt Munday for his quick-thinking and bravery. Chief Inspector Khan said: “PS Munday is one of my finest at Crewe Police Station. It was a cracking job and worthy of the highest recognition.”
