Detectives are quizzing a woman after a senior Garda was seriously injured in a hit-and-run incident in which he lost his foot.
The Irish Mirror has learned that Inspector Niall Flood’s life may have been saved by a colleague who first arrived at the scene and applied a tourniquet to his leg.
Inspt Flood was off duty and cycling on the R522 between Dromcolliher and Feohanagh near Newcastle West in Limerick when he was hit at around 7.15pm on Thursday evening.

The driver of a Volkswagen Passat fled the scene, leaving the victim on the roadside.
The first responder was a Garda who tended to Inspt Flood, aged in his 50s, before he was taken by air ambulance to Cork University Hospital where he underwent emergency treatment.
The victim also suffered a dislocated shoulder.
Although his condition remained serious on Friday evening, he is stable in hospital.
The Irish Mirror can also reveal that the suspect’s partner raised the alarm after she had arrived home.
The woman, in her 20s, was arrested and brought in for questioning.
A Garda spokesman said: “She is currently detained under section 4 of the Criminal Justice Act, 1984 at Henry Street Garda Station.
“A car understood to be involved in the incident was seized for forensic examination.”
The scene was examined by Garda Forensic Collision investigators. Sources said Inspt Flood is a well-respected member of the force who previously served at sergeant rank in Newcastle West.
On Friday, the Association of Garda Sergeants and Inspectors passed on their best wishes to the senior officer.
General Secretary Antoinette Cunningham said: “The thoughts of the Association and especially his local AGSI Branch members in Limerick are with our colleague and his family at this time. We are deeply upset about the incident and extend our well- wishes.” Gardai are appealing for witnesses over the incident.
