A caring brother became his sister’s superhero when he saved her life by donating his bone marrow.
Rio Cheige, 10, stepped into the breach after his elder sibling Ruby, 14, was diagnosed with leukaemia.
Ruby had come home from school one day with leg ache, which her mum Debra, 39, had put down to growing pains.
But the next day, Ruby collapsed and Debra rushed her to hospital.
After blood tests revealed the cancer, the youngster had four months of chemotherapy.
However it failed to kill the cancer, meaning the only option was to find a bone marrow donor.
Rio and his younger brother Marley, three, were tested and Rio was found to be a match.
Ruby had a transplant on September 22, 2022, and is now thankfully finally in remission.
Debra, a support worker from Little Hulton, Salford, Gtr Manchester, said: “I am super proud of Rio and of Ruby. Watching both your children being put to sleep, it isn’t nice.
“We told Rio, ‘Ruby needs this and you’re a match’. He said he wanted to do it, he wanted to be a superhero.”
Rio said: “I was sad when Ruby got sick but when Mum told me there was a chance I could help I wanted to do everything I could. I am so happy Ruby is home and back to herself.”
