Mets outfielder Brandon Nimmo exited New York’s spring training game against the Marlins on Friday after an awkward slide into second base.
On first base during the fourth inning of the Mets’ spring training game vs. the Marlins, Nimmo sprinted to second to and slid hard to try and avoid a double-play. After the inning ended as Miami turned two, Nimmo appeared to be in some serious pain as he grabbed at his leg.
Eventually, Nimmo returned to his feet and walked off the field primarily under his own power before exiting the game. New York later tweeted that Nimmo had right ankle soreness and would undergo further tests on Saturday.
“I talked to him in the locker room after he showered and dressed. He feels pretty good,” Mets manager Buck Showalter said after the game. “[The doctor] is going to take a look at the ankle and just get an image tomorrow to be sure. … Nimmo seems to be pretty positive about it.”
Mets fans have already had more than their fair share of bad injury news this week after closer Edwin Díaz tore his patellar tendon in his right knee during Puerto Rico’s on-field celebration at the World Baseball Classic.
The 29-year-old Nimmo opted to not play in this year’s WBC after he signed an eight-year, $162 million deal to return to the Mets. When he played in the WBC in 2017, he played with Italy and suffered a hamstring strain.
