Brandi Carlile had a 'chaotic and intense' childhood

Brandi Carlile had a "chaotic and intense" childhood.

The 43-year-old singer was the product of young parents who were always at the centre of a "controversy" and explained that she had moved homes a total of 14 times before she moved out on her own to pursue her career.

Speaking on the 'Table Manners' podcast, she told hosts Jessie and Lennie Ware: "We moved 14 times in from the time I as four until I moved out of my parents' house when I was 17.

"There were always different reasons. My parents are amazing people, they're fun. They're with us still, they're together. They're unpredictable, they're like eternal teenagers. They were really young when they had us kids, and I'm the oldest of three kids. And it just felt like growing up with complicated, charismatic teenagers.

"They were always changing their mind in jobs and life and hitting the skids. We were either getting evicted or moving or there was a controversy. There was always something kind of chaotic and intense happening so we'd just kind of take flight."

The 'Right Time' hitmaker reflected because she had to move so much as a child, she has decided to do the opposite in adulthood.

She said: "When I was born, dad was a Boeing machinist, he worked in airplanes. Somewhere around 11 or 12 we moved out deep into the country and he took up construction so I had a construction dad.

"We say Seattle, but really, I live in a really rural part of Washington state.

"I've always lived there, and probably always will. I've lived in the same log cabin for 22 years. I moved so much as a kid that I think 'I'm an adult, no on is making me move! My mom and dad love my place, everybody gathers there for holidays."
