Braehead youngster goes extra mile to help secure special Christmas for those in need

A Braehead youngster has braved the sub-zero temperatures in an effort to help those less fortunate have an extra special Christmas.

Big-hearted seven-year-old Indie McNabney has been helping out with the ‘Angel Tree’ campaign for four years, completing challenges including a ‘sponsored jump’ last year which saw her bouncing on a trampoline 500 times.

The campaign, started up by local author Dianne Higgins-Evans eight years ago, provides ‘Christmas wishes’ - with Stirling children given a paper wish and placed on a tree for people to try and help make the wishes come true.

This year, Indie decided to push herself even further by walking and running a total of 30 miles over recent weeks - despite snowy conditions and freezing temperatures.

The Braehead Primary pupil raised £517 after completing the challenge on Sunday night in Kings Park - enough to fund Christmas presents for a total of 18 children in the region, as well as other items including extra sweets and fluffy socks.

After completing her amazing effort, Indie said: “I really like buying presents for other kids.

“I don’t want them to wake up on Christmas and not have anything to open. That wouldn’t be fair.”

Proud mum Alisha Robertson-McNabney told the Observer: “Indie has been out walking and running in the snow and wind and even though it turned really cold and she was frozen, she was out there because she wanted to help out these children.

“She has been sponsored by family and friends, by her own friends at school and also her dad’s football bus have got behind her and we’ve managed to raise enough for a big bagful of presents for each child.

“I know Indie is very thankful to everyone who sponsored her from family, friends and even strangers.”
