Braehead trio awarded medals from Queen as part of jubilee celebrations

Two men from Linwood have been awarded medals from the Queen for their work as life-saving first responders at a leisure centre in Renfrewshire.

Peter and Stephen Stronach were both presented with a Queen Elizabeth II Platinum Jubilee Medal in recognition of their services at XSite Braehead in responding to life-threatening incidents at the leisure centre until emergency service professionals turn up to assist.

Stephen, Operations Manager at the leisure centre, Peter, Duty Manager, and also Paul McGowan, Security Officer, from Airdrie, were given the award as recognition for serving as first responders for more than five years at the site. Combined they have a working experience of 38 years.

XSite Braehead’s first responders have been specially trained by the Scottish Fire & Rescue Service and the Scottish Ambulance Service to deal with certain kinds of emergencies and provide assistance and reassurance until emergency services arrive.

Stephen described what his duties entail: “First responders act as part of the Scottish Ambulance Service as community volunteers and are trained to react to a wide range of medical situations, from life-threatening heart attacks and strokes to more minor accidents requiring medical attention.”

Their recognition comes as part of Queen Elizabeth’s Platinum Jubilee celebrations. It follows the tradition of awarding medals to mark Royal Jubilees, with the first one awarded to mark the 50th anniversary of Queen Victoria’s reign in 1887.

Rosalind Gibson, Marketing Manager at XSite Braehead, said: “Our trusted team of first responders provide an invaluable service to both customers and staff at XSite Braehead.

“Their life-saving skills mean they are well equipped to provide assistance and appropriate care in the first few vital moments of a potential emergency situation.

“XSite Braehead is a much safer place thanks to them and we are delighted to see them being awarded with a Platinum Jubilee Medal in recognition of their willingness to go above and beyond the call of duty should our customers and colleagues require their assistance.”
