Brad Pitt and Jennifer Aniston appeared to be just like any other love-struck couple as they kissed and cuddled on a Caribbean beach on New Year's Day 2005.
Looking at the amorous pair, it was almost impossible to guess that just seven days later they would announce their separation.
Rumours about Brad's increasing closeness to his Mr and Mrs Smith co-star Angeline Jolie had plagued the couple for months, but during that last fateful holiday, Brad - who turns 57 today - seemingly only had eyes for his wife.
Locals in Anguilla told how the pair were "all over each other" and "seemed happy" during the break with Jen's best friend, Courteney Cox, and her then-husband David Arquette.
“When [Brad and Jen] had dinner together on New Year’s Eve, his arm was around her the whole night,” US Weekly editor Janice Min noted.
“On that last stroll [on the beach], he picked up a shell for her. It was always very sweet and romantic.”
So what went wrong?
One source told People magazine they'd already decided to separate before the pre-booked holiday but thought, "we should still go and have a great time."
However, according to the book 2011 book, Confidential: The Life of Secret Agent Turned Hollywood Tycoon, it was during the holiday that Brad finally came clean about his feelings for Angelina.
Arnon Milchan, who produced Mr and Mrs Smith, said: "At first, Jen didn't believe he was involved with Angelina. She started asking around but no one would tell her anything because they were loyal to Brad, so she asked him point blank. He denied it."
And authors Meir Doran and Joseph Gelman claimed he finally cracked while they were away.
"He eventually admitted he was in love with Angelina. Jen was furious and threw him out," they wrote.
On January 7- while still on holiday - the couple apparently called their relatives before releasing a joint statement confirming their separation.
"For those who follow these sorts of things, we would like to explain that our separation is not the result of any of the speculation reported by the tabloid media," they told People magazine.
"This decision is the result of much thoughtful consideration. We happily remain committed and caring friends with great love and admiration for one another."
But a day later a "visibly distraught' Jen was reportedly seen “was wiping tears from her face,” as they waited to board their flight home at St. Maarten airport.
Brad moved out but both initially kept their wedding rings on amid claims they were "dating" each other and the separation might not be permanent.
“[They] didn’t split because of one bad problem. It’s a little bit of many things, all wrapped up..." an insider claimed at the time.
"As much as these two people care about each other, and they really do care about each other, they just want something different. They still love each other.”
But Jen filed for divorce on the grounds of "irreconcilable differences" just weeks before Brad was pictured holidaying with Angelina and her then three-year-old son Maddox in Diani Beach, Kenya.
For years after Brad denied there had been a "dastardly affair", but in 2006 Angelina gushed about how she "couldn't wait to get to work" to be with him.
"Anything we had to do with each other, we just found a lot of joy in it together and a lot of real teamwork. We just became kind of a pair," she told Vogue in an interview Jen would later brand "uncool".
“It took until, really, the end of the shoot for us, I think, to realize that it might mean something more than we’d earlier allowed ourselves to believe," Angelina continued.
“And then life developed in a way where we could be together, where it felt like something we would do, we should do.”
Brad and Angelina went on to have five more kids before divorcing in a blaze of bitterness in 2016.
