After more than eight years of legal proceedings, Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie have finally settled their divorce, as per court documents filed with the Los Angeles Superior Court on December 30. The settlement did not disclose financial details or specifics of the custody arrangement for their two minor children.
The high-profile couple, who were together for about a decade and parents to six children before marrying in 2014, have been embroiled in a complex divorce process since Jolie filed for divorce in 2016.
The prolonged divorce proceedings were marked by a contentious custody trial, fallout from a 2016 dispute on a private plane, and a legal battle over Jolie's sale of her stake in Château Miraval, the French winery they co-owned and where they were married.
In 2016, details emerged of an incident on a private plane where Jolie accused Pitt of physical assault and verbal abuse towards their children. Pitt was not arrested or charged in relation to the incident.
Jolie sought sole physical custody of their children in her divorce petition, with visitation rights for Pitt. The couple was granted a dissolution in status only of their marriage in 2019.
In a legal filing related to the winery case in 2024, Jolie alleged a history of physical abuse by Pitt that predated the plane incident. She chose not to press charges at the time, believing it was best for Pitt to take responsibility and help the family heal.
Despite the challenges, Jolie expressed her focus on her children's healing and wellbeing, emphasizing that the separation from Pitt was the right decision for the family.
The French winery dispute continues to be a point of contention between the former couple, with Pitt claiming Jolie's 2021 sale of her stake was unlawful.
