Winter isn’t done with the UK just yet, as a fresh blast of snow and heavy rain is set to hit in mid-March. Forecasters predict up to 11cm of snow in parts of Scotland, with a wave of wintry weather moving south across the country.
According to weather maps from WXCharts (which uses Met Desk data), the cold snap is expected to sweep in from the north of Scotland, draping the Highlands in a thick blanket of snow on March 14. Some areas could see between 4-7cm of snowfall, while heavy rain is forecast to lash the rest of the UK—including southern England.

Northern England, in particular, is in for a soaking, with Northumberland bracing for downpours of up to 10mm per hour. And with temperatures hovering around 4°C, any snow that does settle—especially in hilly areas—could stick around for the weekend.
The Met Office’s long-range forecast for March 8-17 suggests things could start off relatively mild, with some sunshine making it feel warmer. But don’t get too comfortable—conditions are expected to turn unsettled, with showers and longer spells of rain across much of the UK, particularly in western areas.

Looking ahead, the forecast becomes more uncertain, but there’s a growing chance that high pressure from the north could take over, bringing drier conditions but also colder temperatures. If this happens, we could be in for a chillier spell with potential wintry hazards. However, by the end of the period, the chances of a return to milder but wetter conditions increase.
So, if you’re in Dundee, Edinburgh, Glasgow, Perth, or Inverness, get ready for a snowy surprise. Meanwhile, cities like York, Sunderland, Newcastle, Carlisle, and Durham should brace for a deluge.
