Brace Yourself: 5 Trends That Could Change Your Job By 2030

artificial intelligence robot

Now, in case you’ve been living under a rock for the last few years, AI has been perhaps the most discussed technological trend shaping industries.

And we might’ve all taken some comfort in knowing it sure isn’t coming for our jobs… but a new report surveying over 1,000 global employers suggests we might need to get on that AI train after all.

According to the World Economic Forum’s latest Future of Jobs report, advancements in technologies, including AI and robotics, are expected to be among the five most transformative trends shaping the jobs market in the next five years.

These advancements are fuelling demand for technology-related skills in the workforce, with the report outlining AI and big data, networks and cybersecurity, and technological literacy as the top three fastest growing skills (surprise surprise).

But while this might be a big one, it’s not the only trend worth watching in this space.

1) ???

AI and information processing technologies are expected to have the biggest impact on the future of jobs moving forward as a considerable 86 per cent of employers it transforming their business by 2030.

And while the general adoption of AI applications remains relatively low at the moment, it looks like that could soon change across the board.

“Although more generalized adoption of AI applications remains comparatively low, with only a small fraction of firms using it in 2023, adoption is growing rapidly, albeit unevenly across sectors,” the report said.

“The information technology sector is leading the way in AI adoption, while industries such as construction are lagging behind.”

Here are the five biggest trends about to shape the way we work, according to the report:

2) The green job boom

It looks like climate change isn’t going unnoticed as demand ramps up for roles like renewable energy engineers, environmental engineers, and more EV-specific roles like electric and autonomous vehicle specialists.

“Despite an increasingly complex outlook for global climate negotiations, the green transition remains a priority for many organizations globally,” the report said, explaining that over 40 per cent of employers expect efforts and investments to adapt to climate change will drive some big changes.

It also means this space is heating up as companies look for more specialised expertise. But in case you were wondering – yeah, demand for workers with ‘green skills’ is far outpacing supply.

3) Big economic changes

Increasing cost of living, higher prices, and a general economic slowdown are also looking to transform jobs moving forward, which is  expected to boost demand for more ~innovative~ skillsets like creative thinking, flexibility, and agility.

Unfortunately, it also means roles like housekeepers, building caretakers, cleaners, as well as administration managers, general managers, and sales and marketing professionals could see significant dips in the next five years.

4) Shifting demographics

The global workforce is aging, especially in higher-income economies, which could support jobs growth for our unsung heroes in nursing, social work, and other healthcare roles. Meanwhile, in lower-income countries, growing working-age populations will ramp up demand for teachers, trainers, and education specialists.

5)

The takeaway?

As the jobs market evolves, it’s looking more and more like it’s upskill or risk being left behind, with a considerable 39 per cent of bosses expecting workers’ core skills will change in the next five years.

This means picking up new skills, learning new tech (and yes, this includes AI!), and staying nimble to changes in the jobs market.

Because like it or not, it looks like there’s some big changes coming our way.
