Boy who's never had haircut gets waist-length locks chopped in support of mum

A schoolboy who's never had a haircut has had his waist-length golden locks chopped off in support of his mum's battle with lung cancer.

Eli McGee had his blonde hair - which measured a whopping 27 inches - trimmed down to his shoulders in an hour-long cut.

The lad is donating 16 inches of curls to the Little Princess Trust, which provides wigs to youngsters with cancer.

Eli got the chop to raise money for Royal Papworth Hospital in Cambridge, which treated his mum Becky Barrett, 55, when she was diagnosed with lung cancer in December.

Doctors spotted Becky's growth early and so could remove it days later with no further treatment needed.

Becky, who is now cancer-free, said: "I think Eli saw the hospital's amazing care and that's why he was inspired to raise the money.

"He was probably starting to get a bit annoyed with his hair anyway, it was getting in the way."

Eli's hair was cut on Wednesday by his aunt Collette McGee, who is a professional stylist based in London.

Eli, from St Ives, Cambs, has raised almost £1,500 for Royal Papworth Hospital Charity after starting with a £100 target.

Earlier this year, The Mirror reported on a little girl who finally donated her hair to charity, after waiting half her life to be able to do so.

When Poppy Lee-Burrowes decided she wanted to cut her hair for the Little Princess Trust when she was just five years old, she was told she wasn't able to - as the charity couldn't make wigs from afro hair.

The determined youngster didn't give up though and kept growing her hair out for six more years just in case the policy changed - and in April 2021, it did.

Poppy, now 11, still plans to donate her hair to the Little Princess Trust and will be chopping off about eight inches on January 29.

Despite knowing she will miss her "big hair, don't care" look, she knows that "other people will be able to love my hair too".

The school student from Rhondda Cynon Taf, Wales, said: "I want to do it because of the people that won't have hair. I want to be generous and help."

She added: "It's taken me since I was about five, I have only ever had small trims in my life, never a big cut, so this is a big deal to me.”
