Boy, seven, and two men attacked by dog - police hunt owner

Police are searching for the owner of a German Shepherd after it attacked a seven-year-old boy and two men. Officers were called to Thornton Heath in south London just before 9am on Wednesday after reports of an “aggressive dog” in Broughton Road.

At the scene they found the child and a man suffering from bite injuries. They were then approached by another man who had also been attacked by the dog.

The London Ambulance Service also attended. None of the victims’ injuries were life-threatening.

A Metropolitan Police spokesman said: “The dog, which appeared to be a German Shepherd breed, was seized by officers and will be assessed. Inquiries are under way to identify and locate the owner of the dog.”

A London Ambulance Service spokesman said: “We were called yesterday (May 31) at 8.57am to reports of a dog attack on Broughton Road, Croydon.

“We sent a medic in a fast-response car, who treated a child at the scene.”

The incident came as the mother of a 10-year-old boy who died after being mauled by a dog called for a change in the law.

Emma Whitfield, 32, is calling for “Jack Lis’ Law”, named after her son who died in Pentwyn, Penyrheol, near Caerphilly, South Wales, in November 2021 following an attack by an XL Bully – a breed developed from the American pit bull terrier.

Brandon Hayden, then 19, was sentenced in June 2022 to just over four years in a young offenders’ institution, and Amy Salter, then 29, was jailed for three years after they pleaded guilty to being in charge of the out-of-control dog, which was named Beast.

A further 15 people have lost their lives in dog attacks in the 18 months since Jack’s death, including an 83-year-old woman in Caerphilly, while there were nearly 22,000 cases of injuries from out-of-control dogs in 2022.
