A student has been rushed to hospital with serious injuries after falling through a deck at a Melbourne school.

The student was on the year 7 and 8 deck at St Kevin's College during recess on Friday when the "deck failed and the boy fell through it", a school spokesman said.

The boy was "responsive" as an ambulance was called to the Toorak campus, and his parents have been informed.

Ambulance Victoria said paramedics were called to an incident in Toorak about 11.20am.

"A teenage boy with upper and lower body injuries was transported by road ambulance to The Royal Children's Hospital in a serious but stable condition," the ambulance spokeswoman said.

Some students and staff witnessed the "challenging situation", the school spokesman said.

"We are aware that incidents such as these can impact people differently," he said.

Counsellors have been called and will arrive on the school site on Friday afternoon to support anyone struggling following the accident.

A WorkSafe Victoria spokeswoman said it had been notified and inspectors and investigators were responding.
