A child cyclist was rushed to hospital in a critical condition on Tuesday afternoon after being hit by a bus in south London.

The collision happened in Surrey Quays Road near Canada Water Station at around 5.30pm. An Air Ambulance was dispatched to the scene, with the boy rushed to hospital in a critical condition.

However, in an update, a Met Police spokesperson said his condition has now been assessed as non-life threatening. His family has been informed of the collision.

A witness told the Metro: “It was absolutely horrifying. Emergency crews were working desperately to help the child.

“The road was shut down very quickly and you could tell something very serious had happened.”

A Met Police spokesperson said: “At about 5.35pm on Tuesday, March 11, officers on patrol came upon a bus in collision with a cyclist on Surrey Quays Road. Officers, the London Ambulance Service and London's Air Ambulance attended.

“The cyclist, who is a child, was taken to hospital in a critical condition. The child's condition has now been confirmed to be non-life threatening. His family has been informed.”

Paramedics also confirmed they attended the scene, with a London Ambulance Service spokesperson saying: “We were called at 5.36pm yesterday (March 11) to reports of a road traffic collision. We sent resources including an ambulance crew, paramedics in fast response cars and an incident response officer to the scene.

"We also dispatched London’s Air Ambulance. We treated a child at the scene and took them to a major trauma centre by road as a priority.”
