Boy George explains why happiness is a 'choice' as he reflects on tricky early years

Boy George has learned to change the way he thinks about life

Boy George has found "happiness" in a way he didn't think was possible.

The 63-year-old pop star - whose real name is George Alan O'Dowd - is preparing go back on the road with his Culture Club bandmates for their upcoming tour but admitted that in the band's heyday, he had a lot of "anxiety" about going on stage that has dissipated over the years.

Speaking on UK TV show 'This Morning', he said: "I think I enjoy it more now because I make the whole process fun. Back in the day, I'd say that no one could come in the dressing room when I was getting ready. It was all drama, drama, drama, anxiety. But now I kind of just enjoy it all when I get up. I kind of pursue joy in a way that I didn't think was possible. I didn't really understand that happiness was a choice."

The 'Karma Chameleon' hitmaker has learned to think about things in a different way and insisted that happiness is a "choice" and wishes he knew how to have "fun" in his youth in the way he does now.

He said: "It's practice. I follow these things called the three principles that teach you to look at the way you think in a different way. Plus, I talk to myself and I do a lot of affirmations. As soon as I wake up, I tell myself I'm in a good mood. It's very easy to slip into...I always say to people who say 'Oh I'm not a morning person', well, you're just making it a reality. I really do think that happiness is a a choice.

"I wish I'd known how to have fun in the way that I do now!"
