Boy fighting for life, vile pair stole benefits and 'inspiring' grandad

These are the latest Liverpool ECHO headlines this morning.

Boy, 13, fighting for life after he's hit by car on East Lancs Road

A 13-year-old boy is fighting for his life in hospital after he was hit by a car on the East Lancashire Road in Croxteth.

Merseyside Police officers rushed to the East Lancs Road at 7.25pm on Wednesday, December 7, and closed the road in both directions between Stonebridge Lane and Lower Lane. Officers confirmed reports there had been a "serious road traffic collision" near to the Stonedale Retail Park.

The boy was hit by a silver Vauxhall Astra estate near to the Showcase cinema and the driver of the car stopped at the scene. They are now assisting police with the investigation.

Man tried to jump from motorway bridge after vile pair stole his benefits

The cruel crimes of a pair of despicable robbers were discovered when their vulnerable victim tried to jump off a motorway bridge.

Claire Brennan and Brian Elliott drove the man to the brink of suicide after leaving him with no money to feed himself or pay bills. But, after being talked down by police, he opened up about how they had routinely been marching him to a cash machine once every two weeks and forcing him to hand over his benefit money on the day it was paid.

Liverpool Crown Court heard yesterday, Wednesday, that the pair subjected James Farrell to a "programme of intimidation and robbery". Arthur Gibson, prosecuting, described how Elliott and Brennan - both of Devonshire Road in Oxton, Wirral - would call at his flat fortnightly on the date his benefits were paid then "frog march" him to an ATM and "withdraw all his money".

He "had no money for food or bills" as a result and had to borrow funds from his mother "in order to exist from one week to the next". Elliott, 42, threatened to stab the complainant in the face on one occasion.

On another, Mr Farrell told the defendants he did not have his bank card as he had left it at his mum's. But they escorted him to her sheltered accommodation "in the small hours of the morning" in order to retrieve it. Read the full story here.

'Inspiring' grandad goes parasailing on family holiday months before turning 100

An "inspiring" great grandad who turns 100 today went parasailing on an "epic" holiday with family just months ago.

John Davies is "not your average" centenarian according to his granddaughter and just months ago he even hopped on a plane to Turkey where they went parasailing together. Kaija Gosling told the ECHO that in August, John, from Speke, travelled to join them on an "epic" family holiday before making the daring decision.

Recalling the trip, Liverpool FC fan John, who was born in 1922, said: "We were sunbathing and watching them going back and forwards and my granddaughter suggested we do it. It was very good.

"I really enjoyed it. I was a bit dubious at first, but once I was up there I quite enjoyed myself."

John met his "childhood sweetheart" Marjorie Davies at the Church Hall in Speke, when they were just 15 and 12-years-old. They pair married in 1945 - 11 days after the war - where they stayed together until 1992 when she died at the age of 66.

Speaking to the ECHO about his long life, John said that the war took "the best part" of his life away but he has many great memories with his loved ones. After leaving the navy, John worked on a cruise ship and in the Ford factory before retiring. Read more here.
