A man has been charged after two children playing in a Melbourne laneway were struck by a car, leaving one fighting for life in hospital.

The 48-year-old was arrested following the collision in suburban Braybrook shortly before 5.30pm on Tuesday.

Police said his Toyota Prado ran into two parked cars in a rear lane between Wirraway Ave and Liberator Lane and then struck two young children before hitting another parked car.

An eight-year-old boy was pinned between the vehicles before being freed by emergency services and was taken to hospital with life-threatening injuries.

A three-year-old boy was also taken to hospital with injuries not considered life-threatening.

The driver was on Wednesday charged with dangerous driving causing serious injury, reckless conduct endangering serious injury, driving while unlicensed, careless driving and driving in a manner dangerous.

He was bailed to appear before the Melbourne Magistrates Court on Thursday.
