Boy asleep in taxi driven to Glasgow Airport after dad and driver failed to spot him

A sleeping boy was accidentally driven to the airport in a Glasgow taxi after the driver and his dad failed to realise he was still inside the car.

The panicked father raised the alarm after he and the child were meant to be dropped off in Maryhill on Friday morning.

But the child, believed to be around five, stayed in the vehicle and was then driven the 11 miles back to Glasgow Airport where he and his dad had initially been picked up.

Police were called and swiftly made contact with airport staff who were able to reunite the duo a short time later, the Daily Record reports.

A source said: “No one really knows how this happened. Neither the dad nor the taxi driver realised that the child was still in the car after they were dropped off.

“Thankfully the child was safe and well but I think everyone got a bit of a fright. It’s like Home Alone Glasgow edition.”

Police Scotland confirmed the awkward incident and stressed that there was no concern for the child’s welfare.

A force spokesperson said: “Around 9.20 this morning, Friday, 4 February, 2022, police were called after a taxi driver dropping off passengers in Petershill Road, Maryhill inadvertently drove off with a sleeping child in the back.

“The taxi driver was located a short time later and the child reunited with the parents. No concern for the child. Advice and assistance given."

A spokesperson for Glasgow Airport added: “We are aware of the incident and can confirm that the taxi driver concerned ensured the child and his father were quickly reunited when the highly-unusual situation became clear.”
