Boy, 8, rushed to hospital with serious head injury following crash on London road

An eight-year-old boy has been rushed to hospital with head and leg injuries after a car crash in the capital.

The smash took place on the A236 in Mitcham, south London, at shortly before 1pm on Saturday, MyLondon reports.

The child was treated at the scene before being rushed to a local major trauma centre.

He is now in hospital in a serious but stable condition, the Metropolitan Police said.

The driver of the car stopped at the scene and is helping officers with their enquiries.

A London Ambulance Service spokesperson said: “We were called at 12.56pm today (26 March) to reports of a road traffic collision in Upper Green East, Mitcham.

“We sent an ambulance crew which arrived at the scene in less than six minutes. We treated a child at the scene for a head and leg injury and took him to a major trauma centre as a priority.”

Major trauma centres are specialist hospitals responsible for the care of the most severely injured patients involved in major trauma. The patient will be provided with 24/7 emergency care.

A spokesperson for the Metropolitan Police told MyLondon : "Police were called to Clarendon Grove, Mitcham, at 12.57pm on Saturday, March 26, to reports of a collision involving a child and a car.

"Officers attended. An eight-year-old boy was found injured.

"He was treated at the scene before being taken to hospital where he is in a serious but stable condition.

"The driver of the car stopped at the scene and is helping police with their enquiries."

As a result of the crash, the A236 Commonside West was closed in both directions.

There were traffic jams between A217 London Road and Commonside East Roundabout.
