A 16-year-old boy was taken to hospital with facial injuries after being assaulted near a school. Gwent Police confirmed that enquiries are currently ongoing to trace the attackers involved in the incident on Spytty Road in Newport. Separately, the head teacher of Lliswerry High School confirmed that a learner had been assaulted on their way home from school.
In a statement, police said the force had received a call from the school at around 12.45pm on Monday, April 24, reporting concerns about a reported planned fight which was due to take place after school outside school grounds but officers attended and reported no disturbance.
A spokesperson for Gwent Police said: "We had a call from Lliswerry Comprehensive school at about 12.45pm yesterday, Monday 24 April, reporting concerns about a planned fight that was reportedly taking place after school, outside school grounds. Officers attended the area around the school, after the school had finished for the day, and there was no disturbance in that area.
"At about 3.30pm, yesterday afternoon, an officer found a 16-year-old boy who’d been assaulted on Spytty Road. He’d suffered facial injuries and was taken to hospital and has since been released. Enquiries are currently ongoing to trace the offenders."
Neil Davies, who leads Lliswerry High School, said in a letter to parents on Monday that "one of our learners was assaulted by unknown assailants as he made his way home from school today".
The alleged assault took place "at the bus stop on the SDR, at the side of Spytty Stadium 3G pitch" and happened "just after 3pm", Mr Davies said. "If you witnessed this or have any information about it, please contact the school or Gwent Police."
