Teenager arrested after pupil, 15, injured at Bethnal Green school

A teenager has been arrested after a 15-year-old boy was injured at an east London school on Thursday.

Police were contacted by the Royal London Hospital about the incident at Morpeth School in Bethnal Green at 3pm after a boy, also aged 15, attended with an injury.

The victim had sustained the injury during an incident at the school earlier in the day, said police. He has since been discharged.

A 15-year-old boy has been arrested on suspicion of assault and bailed to return on a date in mid-June, said police.

Officers initially said in a statement the incident reportedly involved a “bladed article”, but have subsequently apologised as that turned out not to be the case.

Met Superintendent Andy Port said: “The initial allegation made to police was that the boy had received the injury as a result of a bladed weapon.

“Our investigation has subsequently established that this was not the case.

“I understand the distress and concern that mentioning a bladed weapon in the original partnership message has caused to the school and the wider community and even though the message was sent with the very best intention I apologise that the message was circulated before the full facts were established.”

Enquiries into the circumstances of the incident continue.
