A teenager was dragged out of a frozen reservoir dead after falling through the ice despite police efforts to save him.
The 14-year-old boy was on the ice with two more teenagers, aged 16 and 18, at Settlement Canyon Reservoir in Tooele, Utah, US.
Sadly, the ice broke, causing the 14-year-old and 18-year-old to fall through the ice. The 16-year-old ran up the road and called 911 for help.
Emergency crews received a report around 7pm local time (2am UK) that someone had fallen through the ice.
Officers immediately responded to the call and began the search for the missing 14-year-old boy.
His 18-year-old friend managed to escape, while search and rescue teams searched late into the night to find the other missing boy.
The Tooele County School District spokesman Brett Valdez confirmed that he was a student at Tooele High School and later identified him as Jayden Davis, KSL reported.
Davis was an athlete and a member of the high school's football and boys' basketball teams as a quarterback and a point guard.
Tooele Police Lieutenant Jeremy Hansen said that the ice was not thick and breaking as police officers went out to search for the missing boy.
During the operation, one officer actually fell through the ice, and a couple of firefighters also did partially.
"The ice is not thick at all and it's creating issues for the recovery effort itself," Mr Hansen said at the time.
"One officer actually fell all the way through and the other officers on the scene helped him back up on top of the ice.
"He was warmed up in the back of the ambulance and is fine."
Search and rescue teams finally found the 14-year-old boy's body just after midnight. The 18-year-old.
It is unknown what the three were doing on the ice.
Mr Hansen urged individuals to be cautious and informed about the thickness of ice on area lakes and waterways before fishing, walking, or skating on ice.
The National Weather Service also tweeted a warning, urging people to test the ice before going too far out and that ice below 2 inches is not safe to walk or fish on.
Tooele County School District offered its condolences to the family and friends of Davis and said that crisis teams and counsellors are available at Tooele High School for any students, faculty, or staff who would like to talk with someone.
The community is mourning the tragic loss of a young life and supporting one another through this difficult time, it said.
