Police are questioning a 12-year-old boy on suspicion of murder after a woman in her 60s was struck and killed by a car in a “tragic” incident in Sheffield.
Officers were called to the Greenhill area of the city at about 7.10pm on Wednesday after receiving reports that a woman had been hit by a vehicle, South Yorkshire police said.
The woman was seriously injured and died at the scene, the force said. The boy was found a short time later and arrested on suspicion of murder and possession of a bladed article. He remained in police custody on Thursday night.
DCI Andrea Bowell said: “This will be a deeply distressing time for the families of those involved in this incident, and I would ask their privacy is respected as they seek to understand what has happened.”
A number of floral tributes were laid at the scene in Hemper Lane on Thursday. One card read: “I’m so sorry for your loss. She was a beautiful soul.”
A neighbour told YorkshireLive: “It’s just really sad, I don’t feel like I can say too much at this moment. It’s just tragic though and it does come as a massive shock.”
Another said: “It’s normally really quiet round here. I know someone has been killed but not sure about anything else. It’s just a nice, quiet place to live, so this has come as a shock to be honest.”
