A 12-year-old boy has been arrested on suspicion of murder after a woman in her 60s was struck by a car and killed.

South Yorkshire Police were called to a reported collision in the Greenhill area of Sheffield, where they found a woman with serious injuries who later died at the scene.

The boy was arrested shortly afterwards and remains in custody. Police said he was also being held for possession of a bladed article.

The victim, named locally as Marcia, is believed to have worked as a foster carer.

Flowers have been left at the scene in Hemper Lane. One card among the tributes read: “I’m so sorry for your loss. She was a beautiful soul. Love.”

Another woman arrived sobbing and left flowers with a card. She was helped away by local residents who tried to comfort her.

‘A nice, quiet place to live’

A police cordon remains in place at a property on the road near to where the incident took place. A silver Honda Accord was in the middle of the street facing the property.

One resident told YorkshireLive: “It’s normally really quiet round here. I knew someone had been killed but was not sure about anything else. It’s just a nice, quiet place to live so this has come as a shock.”

House prices on the road where the killing took place cost an average £400,000. The property that was cordoned off was a semi-detached house with a white car on its gravel drive.

Det Chf Insp Andrea Bowell said: “This will be a deeply distressing time for the families of those involved in this incident, and I would ask that their privacy is respected as they seek to understand what has happened.”

South Yorkshire Police said: “Police in Sheffield were called at 7.10pm on Wednesday April 5, to the Greenhill area, following a report of a collision between a car and a woman.”
