Boxing promoter responds to Conor McGregor's offer to foot €500,000 bill for Katie Taylor fight

Boxing promoter Eddie Hearn has said he’ll talk to Conor McGregor about his offer to help stage Katie Taylor’s homecoming fight at Croke Park.

The announcement of Katie’s fight with Amanda Serrano in the 3Arena caused an immediate backlash – with many expecting the fight to take place in front of 80,000 fans in Croke Park in May. Hearn blasted the costs involved to have the fight at Croker, saying it was almost three times higher than Wembley Stadium.

The GAA denied this and insisted top security would be needed for the event. Now, McGregor has entered the ring and said he will sponsor the reported €500,000 security costs so the fight can go ahead in Croke Park on May 20.

Taking to Twitter, he posted: “The extra security bill is 500k to have Katie Taylor fight at Croke Park? I will sponsor the event to see this happen.” In response to McGregor’s tweet, Hearn simply tweeted: “Let’s talk.”

McGregor publicly replied, asking: “What’s the craic? Give me the current landscape. I’m in. Is this doable still? Or is it a double show, the point [3Arena] first with Croke park later in year, post the GAA season? I’m in either way. She better be getting her worth for this also.”

Fans have been quick to heap praise on the UFC star. One wrote: “EddieHearn, Call @TheNotoriousMMA and make this happen, Zero excuses now.

“History in the making. KatieTaylor deserves this. Boxing deserves this.” Another fan even suggested that McGregor should fight on the same card at Croker.

The Irish Sunday Mirror contacted the GAA for comment yesterday.
