Boxing competition in Glasgow's Emirates Arena cancelled amid reports of firearm

An international boxing competition in Glasgow's Emirates Arena was axed following reports of a firearm found in the building.

Cops raced to the London Road venue after the alarm was raised around 1pm on Saturday, June 25 while the MTK Global Lonsdale Box Cup was taking place.

Officers swept the area but said no weapon was found.

The decision was taken, however, to call off the three-day event, which had been touted as a prestigious amateur tournament attracting fighters from around the world.

A Police Scotland spokesperson said: “Around 1pm on Saturday, 25 June, officers received a report of a firearm at the Emirates Arena, London Road, Glasgow.

"Uniformed officers attended and searched the area however there was no firearm recovered.

“Following discussion with event organisers and security, police monitored the cancellation of the event from a distance.

“Enquiries are ongoing.”

The 2022 edition of the Box Cup was due to take place from Friday to Sunday.

It has previously taken place in Cumbria but headed to Glasgow this year in a bid to showcase 'the very best amateur boxers' in a bigger venue.
